As we celebrate our 35th anniversary at Spergel this week, we reflect on the journey that began with a vision to relieve financial burdens and pave the way for a brighter future for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians we’ve assisted along the way. Since our inception, Spergel has been driven by a commitment to professionalism, compassion, and integrity – principles ingrained in their foundation by our founder, Alan Spergel.

In this celebrational article, we revisit our key principles and how they’re embodied by our teams in what we do each and every day.

Adapting to change

Our Founder and Managing Partner, Alan Spergel, reflects on the evolution of the industry, highlighting the significant trends shaping the landscape of insolvency services. From advancements in technology to shifting client demographics, Spergel has continuously adapted to meet emerging needs while upholding our core values of compassion and professionalism. Technology has enabled the firm to grow and make our client service more efficient than ever.

As the demand for insolvency solutions rises, Spergel remains at the forefront, leveraging our knowledge and expertise to provide personalized services tailored to each client’s unique circumstances. Alan believes that the firm is only as strong as its staff, continually encouraging and supporting them to develop their levels of education and knowledge while ensuring each team member embraces their individuality.

As a business that is constantly evolving, we’re always looking for more efficient ways of performing services, leaning on our close network of partners to share and discuss industry issues and how best to tackle them in order to support our clients more effectively.

Leading with empathy

Gillian Goldblatt, Partner at msi Spergel Inc., proudly embodies the essence of Spergel’s mission. With a strong background in accounting, auditing, and recruitment, Gillian’s journey to becoming a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) was inspired by her father, Alan Spergel, the firm’s founder.

Gillian’s transition to the insolvency field was not merely a career choice but a continuation of a legacy built on compassion and a dedication to helping others. Growing up at home, Gillian was inspired by the phone calls received by her father out of hours, and his ability to make a genuine difference to the lives of panicked, and often stressed, clients in need of urgent financial relief. Her unique skill set, combined with her empathy-driven leadership style, has been instrumental in overseeing the firm’s day-to-day operations and guiding clients through challenging financial times.

In an industry often perceived as daunting, Gillian emphasizes the importance of leading with empathy, especially for female LITs. She understands the significance of providing a supportive environment where clients feel understood and empowered to navigate their financial challenges. Gillian has been committed to fostering inclusivity within the industry, as reflected through her leadership in initiatives that champion gender equality and diversity in the workplace, including ReferToHer’s list of female LITs.

Building strong relationships

At the heart of Spergel’s success lies our ability to build strong relationships with clients, rooted in trust and understanding. Alan underscores the importance of compassion and communication in fostering these connections, ensuring that clients feel supported through every step of their journey. Unlike other insolvency firms in Canada, each Spergel client receives a dedicated Licensed Insolvency Trustee to walk them through every step of their debt relief journey, instead of being passed from person to person. We also strive to be as available as possible for our clients – both out of hours and even by text.

By prioritizing client satisfaction and maintaining open lines of communication, Spergel has earned a reputation for excellence in client service, setting the standard for insolvency firms nationwide. We treat every individual with dignity and empower them with the knowledge required to make the best decisions for their financial future. We take our time, show compassion, and understand that debt-related issues can happen to anyone.

Looking towards the future

As Spergel faces and overcomes each challenge, and as each client’s life is transformed, our firm continues to climb toward new heights. As we celebrate 35 years of service, our commitment to empowering individuals and families to overcome financial challenges remains as strong as ever. We’ve since helped over 100,000 Canadians to gain debt relief, and have a legacy built on compassion, professionalism, and integrity. Our whole team looks towards the future with optimism and determination.

As Alan aptly puts it, “without valleys, there won’t be mountains”. With each challenge overcome and each life transformed, Spergel continues to climb towards new heights, guided by a dedication to our mission and values.

Led by the vision, ‘let our family help yours’, we uphold our promise to provide the best customer service possible. As we embark on the next chapter of our journey, our mission remains clear: to help clients achieve financial freedom – freedom from debt, freedom from stress, and the freedom to pursue their dreams.

Here’s to 35 years of excellence and to many more years of empowering individuals and families to build a brighter financial future.
