Debt freedom has been our number one priority for over 30 years.
30 years ago, Spergel’s doors were first opened to the public in Toronto. Now, decades later, as we celebrate our milestone 30th anniversary, the Spergel vision to provide smart, simple debt freedom solutions with dignity and compassion has helped more than 60,000 people get out of debt. We credit our success with understanding and respecting the amount of courage it takes for someone to reach out while struggling with debt. We pride ourselves most on two very important yet simple things.
First, when you visit one of our offices, you’ll meet the person who will take care of you from day one until the day you become debt free. The same person will be your only point of contact and you won’t be passed around from department to department. Second, we operate as a family and we want you to feel like family. We want you to feel welcome, safe, and fully supported by our team.
Spergel – Like Family
The thing that really sets us apart as a team at Spergel is how we treat everyone like family. Just like growing up with a family around you to care and support you – we care and support you during your journey to debt freedom. Our FREE, no-obligation consultations include a quick review of your debts, income, assets and recent financial history. We take a look and crunch the numbers to give you a better idea of what your debt relief plan will cost. We’ll provide you with options that will lead to the debt free lifestyle you desire. Whether you live on the west coast, the prairies or in Ontario where our roots were first planted, you’re all part of the Spergel family and will benefit from our core values.
Our Founder, Alan Spergel
Alan Spergel is a true leader of industry. In addition to founding Spergel 30 years ago, Alan also founded the Independent Canadian Insolvency Network (ICIN), a network of independent LITs across Canada. Linking Licensed Insolvency Trustees (LITs) across the country and overseas, the ICIN has revolutionized the process for helping businesses in debt (especially those who have cross-border/foreign interests). Over the past 30 years, Alan has cultivated a unique environment at Spergel where compassion meets innovation.
Aligned with Alan’s values and vision, the Spergel team has evolved to become a welcoming family, dedicated to making people feel comfortable while working towards debt freedom. Alan has served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP) and he has recently become chair of the Humber River Hospital Foundation. An authority on everything related to bankruptcy, from 2009 to 2011, Alan was a member of the advisory board to our governing body, the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.
Q&A with Alan Spergel
To celebrate our 30th anniversary year, we’ve decided to ask Alan a few important questions about our roots. In our financial counseling sessions, we stress the importance of knowing both cause and effect – to understand how Spergel has become the compassionate organization it is today, it’s important to know a little bit about where we came from.
Question: Why do we hold compassion at the top of our values?
Alan: “I’ve been working with people for a very long time and one important thing I’ve learned is that you’ve got to treat everyone you meet with dignity and respect. Every person is unique and deserving of fair treatment, regardless of how they’ve found their way into trouble. To be met with compassion during what is almost always a very difficult time, that is the very least we can offer to someone who is worried about their financial future. Compassion is an important part of the service that we offer.”
Question: What do you think is the most important quality in a Licensed Insolvency Trustee?
Alan: “While our doors have been open for 30 years, those doors have not been revolving. What I mean is, most of our LITs have been with us for a long time. The qualities I seek when inviting a new LIT to join us are for someone who embodies our caring and empathetic approach. I think the ability to empathize and relate to our clients is part of what sets the Trustees at Spergel apart. We also take all the time you need to make you feel comfortable with your decision to file a bankruptcy or consumer proposal.”
Question: Where do you see Spergel in the future?
Alan: “We are expanding. We’ve recently opened up a new office in British Columbia. I see continued growth for Spergel. We have an incredible team. We hope to continue fulfilling our vision of providing people in need with a compassionate and dignified path towards debt freedom.”
